Finally, the children came! And our classrooms were filled with curiosity, wonder and enthusiasm.
Creating CommunityThis week, 2nd graders made body maps. They traced each other on white butcher paper, and then filled their insides with important things about themselves: hands and feet for favorite activities, heart for the most important, and their heads for their goals and dreams. Then we participated in a gallery walk to learn about each other. We collaborated in groups to solve a problem that we found in a read aloud, known as "novel engineering". Mr. Manger's class designed structures to protect them from the coyote in Three Little Javelinas.

Dear Families, Welcome to second grade! Our team is so excited for our first day of school next week. The first day of school is Monday, August 27th. We start at 8:15AM. Make sure to bring water and a good snack. Here is a brief introduction to the second grade team: Jeremy Manger Five years ago I helped start this school as a first grade teacher, and then have been teaching third and second grade since. Before moving to San Diego with my family, we lived in Ethiopia and loved the opportunity to work, teach and live with people from nations across the world. I started in New York City at Bank Street College of Education. I have two children, both of whom will be at school with me this year. Jake is in third grade, and Sydney is starting first grade. I love going to the beach with my family, crashing in the waves and digging in the sand. Being outside and exploring our world! Jen Street I am thrilled to be starting a new school year at HTeNC! Originally from San Jose, California, I came down to San Diego for college and moved back to the Bay Area to start my teaching career. I love to cook, garden, and spend time with my family and friends. I am happy to back in the San Diego area and excited to meet your children next week! Jolene Walter I grew up in San Diego and after ten years away I’m very happy to be back! I’ve spent the past several years in upstate New York teaching at an Expeditionary Learning school. When I’m not at school I love to find new places to eat and spend time outside. This summer I got to snorkel with fish in Fiji! Roxanne Sepehri: Engineering I went to SDSU where I got my bachelors degree in civil engineering then later went on to get my multiple subject teaching credential. I was so excited to find a position that combines both my loves in life and I am thrilled to meet all of your students. We’ll be kicking off the year with an exciting project to help us build our community and have fun together, using lots of cardboard. Please bring an empty shoebox to school next week! We have a few important dates planned:
We’ve included a completely optional supply list below if you would like to donate supplies to the classroom. At HTeNC, all of our materials are shared among our classroom community and any donated supplies will be shared among the students. (Please note specific brand names - we have intentionally been specific about some items we are requesting in order to be consistent across the grade.) 2nd Grade Supply List (completely optional)*
We also suggest you send in a reusable water bottle (with a sipping spout, rather than an open screw-on top) which your child can keep in the classroom. We can’t wait to work with you all this year! Sincerely, Jeremy Manger Jen Street [email protected] [email protected] Jolene Walter Roxanne Sepehri [email protected] [email protected] *Note about supplies: The Constitution of the State of California requires that we provide a public education to you free of charge. Subject to certain exceptions, your right to a free public education means that we cannot require you or your family to purchase materials, supplies, equipment or uniforms for any school activity. Below is an optional list of supplies that your child can bring to school. Please note that if your child does not bring the recommended supplies, the school will provide the supplies for him/her. If you have any questions about this, please contact your child’s teacher or the school director. All the classroom materials will be shared as a community.
