Prototyping!!After empathizing with our Kindergarten buddies, defining the problem, and ideating our game design, we began building our prototypes this week. We will bring these prototypes to Chuck E. Cheese's on Wednesday. The game technician will provide critique for our games, so we can reiterate and make them better. In addition, we will have our Kindergarten buddies play them, so we can observe how to improve the games.

WritingHere is a glimpse into our Writing Workshop. Students created flip books for their stories, using pictures and words to rehearse the beginning, middle and ending. These pictures and short videos show students drafting their stories. They are using the flip book to organize their story and to help them remember some of the details. Then we shared our stories with partners and revised them. We will type them on our chromebooks next week.

Launch WeekMake sure to check out our project launch and project details in our previous post. Also, click here to see our project info page. Check out the intensity as we watched Caine's Arcade, and were inspired to build arcade games out of cardboard. Playdate! After watching Caine's Arcade, the students decided that we could build arcade games for our community, specifically for our Kindergarten buddies to play and have fun together. We had our first playdate on Monday, and our second graders were incredibly caring and compassionate friends. We will return next week to interview and get to know our buddies better, since they will be our "customers." A first step in Engineering Design Thinking is "Empathize," which means to understand our customer. IdeateWe had some fun designing and building, as we brainstorm ideas for our games. MathSecond graders continued working on solving story problems and a new routine called "counting jar." Counting Jar involves accurately counting a given collection of things, double checking your count, creating an equivalent set with cubes, and then recording your counting strategy. Our project is inspired by Caine...THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
Field Work to Fleet Science CenterDuring the Engineering Workshop, our second graders worked together to build a tower to withstand wind, and a catapult to launch a cotton ball. It was fun to watch everyone engaged, and using friendly words and actions to collaborate.
We watched an inspirational IMAX movie called "Dream Big" that highlighted several engineers and their desire to help others, which was a big take away for our students. Then we explored the science museum... MathOur school has adopted Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) as our overarching philosophy for math instruction. It is a specific approach to teaching math that utilizes students' natural problem solving abilities. This week we began story problems using this specific approach: teachers pose a story problem and give students time to grapple with solving the problem, and then facilitate a discourse around the problem solving strategies that students used. Students' work is documented, and we can review it throughout the year, including during conferences.
