Business CollaborationTeams are collaborating to write their pitch deck. We have a business expert visiting on Tuesday to critique our business plans. And then a "potential investor" will visit on Wednesday to hear our pitches. We have been writing and filming our commercials: we focused on hooks, opinion statements with supporting details, and a slogan. Our Art Workshop continues as well. Here's a sneak peak at our products to be sold on Market Day (March 11th and 12th).

Our Feelings ChartThis week we focused on feelings: different feeling words, and then how to express and identify our feelings and those of our peers. Below are the pictures we staged on Friday to make our own feelings chart.
The Project is really underway now...Our day is filled with project work: In math we are working as teams in t-shirt factories (a unit out of Context for Learning).
In Writing, we are working on our business plans.
In addition, we continue learning about business with Ms. McGhee. Our business lingo wall is filling up with words like "product" and "price" and "community" and "producers" and "consumers". We have been learning more about business through our read aloud, The Lemonade War. And we have begun researching how to start a business and other similar topics online - using Epic! Books. And we continue to play.A fox visited us yesterday.
It was Kindness Week!I really loved our Kind week together. We had fun smiling, dancing, and taking care of each other. We even had a visit from a local dentist, who taught us about the importance of taking care of ourselves and our teeth so we can be healthy and have a beautiful smile. That same morning we greeted our school community outside as school opened; we saw some of you in fact:) Introducing Mrs. McGheeLots of you have had a chance to meet Alexsis McGhee. She is our awesome student teacher, and has spent lots of time in our classroom supporting our learning. Lately she has begun teaching a few lessons, and will continue to teach throughout this project and into April. Here you'll see her teaching a business lesson from Junior Achievement. Ask your child how their Donut Factory did on Thursday. Our first guest...Ms. Tina from the high school spoke to us about her T-shirt business, and how to figure out the pricing of her shirts. We will use this guidance this week as we begin to figure out material costs and price our products. Thank you Tina! Our second guest on Friday...Project Announcement!Market ResearchWe surveyed two classes to see what products our potential customers would buy. Each student has decided on 3 art products they would like to make and then asked students in 4th grade and 1st grade which product they would prefer. We will graph our results and calculate costs next week.
Field Work to Spanish Village Art CenterWe were so fortunate to connect with Nancy Scheuermann at the Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park. She arranged for a very successful field work experience. First, Jeffery Iles gave us a brief history of the village and answered lots of questions. Then we met with 4 different artists: Frank Casciani – Egg Artist, Studio 14; Daphne Gaylord – Acrylic Paint Pouring, Studio 3; Nadja Lancelot – Silk Painting, Studio 16B; and Tracy DePue – Paper Arts, Studio 7. We hope to bring these arts to our school and our work with Ms. Vinetz. See below for pictures. So, what is our project? We turned that question over to our students on Friday. And they decided that they want to start their own businesses and sell their art to raise money. After all, we have been learning about money, making lots of different art products, and reading a story about kids who open a lemonade stand. Check out our project handout below. If you have any expertise in business, please let me know.
Rainy DaysLast week we outlasted the rains with some indoor play.
The Power of Giving
We are collecting books written in Spanish and books written in Spanish and English. We will be donating them to a community in Tijuana through the organization Casas de Luz. This is part of our mini-project on the Power of Giving. Estamos recolectando libros escritos en español y libros escritos en español e inglés. Los donaremos a una comunidad en Tijuana a través de la organización Casas de Luz. Esto es parte de nuestro mini-proyecto sobre el poder de dar. Our students will be wrapping the books and making other items like bookmarks and cards to accompany the books. We hope to help supply books to the families and local school that Casas de Luz services. They will be hand delivered over the holiday break. If you could reach out to your classes and families, we would appreciate it. Let's set a deadline for next Wednesday, Dec. 19th, so we can adequately prepare materials for wrapping, etc. Let me know if you have any questions. KindnessWe are a chapter of Kids for Peace, an organization based in Carlsbad that stands up for global peace and kindness. The project is based on compassion: being aware when others need help. PlayWe had some fun playing outside this week as well. Success! The City of Games (arcade) was beautiful and fun. Our mission was to build something that would unite people around play, and we did it! In addition, students were able to share their learning and explain the design thinking process in our process rooms.
