I love watching students teach adults. These photos from our final 2nd grade exhibition show our students being the experts and teaching you about our garden and the science behind the garden. Thank you for making the night special. On Friday, so many students reflected that they felt so proud of themselves for being able to teach you.

We will showcase our native garden and teach you the science we learned and used about plants. Exhibition will be held on Thursday, June 6th from 4:30-6 PM. Each student was assigned a 30 minute period; please check the email to confirm. Peer CritiqueWe partnered with the other 2nd grade classrooms to provide and receive peer critique for writing our garden guide. Soil LabsWe continue to observe and record the growth of our plants. One experiment tested different soils, and a second experiment tested water amounts.
As Scientists...we learned about the parts of a plant, the parts of flower, and continue to observe our fast plants. We learning about the flower, Mrs. Lee facilitated an activity in which students were able to pollinate flowers and learn about the birds and the bees. Garden CreationField work to the Green Thumb Nursery... We met Judy at the nursery and learned about several native plants that we've studied. We decided to purchase 7 plants with the money we raised in our entrepreneur project. On Thursday, we made a plan. And then we planted. Soil LabsOur young scientists and gardeners have explored seeds in the Science Lab with Mrs. Lee through seed dissections and explorations of how seeds travel or disperse. In the classroom, we have focused on soil. What is soil? What is in soil? This week we started an experiment testing 5 soil types: clay, sand, compost, garden soil (from our garden), and a soil mix (from the store). Next week we will start another experiment on water and finding the optimal amount of water for growing plants.
Major Announcement
Field Work to the Elfin ForestWe had an adventure in the Elfin Forest, courtesy of The Escondido Creek Conservancy. One major highlight, as surely all students shared with family and friends, was crossing the creek on a stone path. It was a proud moment to watch our 2nd graders help each other hop across. In addition, we learned about native, non-native, and invasive plants. We returned to the classroom with this knowledge, and will begin researching the native plants that we wish to grow in our garden at school. Thank you Simon Breen and Mrs. Lee for helping us begin our journey. We launched in the garden...Lots of fun. Lots of excitement. Lots of pointing. Lots of noticings... Lots of wonderings, which students then sorted into subtopics... Then we returned the next day with our science notebooks, because scientists record their observations with pictures and words. We noticed even more life in the garden, and had more questions.
And we checked out the middle school garden with Mr. Vega, and recorded more observations and had even more questions. Mrs. Lee's Science LabStudents have begun exploring the world of plants in Science with Mrs. Lee. On Thursday, students studied the structure and function of different plant parts.
2nd Grade Market PlaceI was so proud of our young entrepreneurs this week. They worked so hard, and were able to reap the fruits of their labor at our 2nd grade market place. It poured rain and money! We earned over $1,000 for our next project - money that will be donated to Escondido Creek Conservancy and our final spring project. This coming week, each entrepreneur will share their work (behind the scenes), including their portfolio, pitch deck, and commercial, at their Student Led Conference (SLC). Thank you for your support!2nd Grade Market Place: CommercialsWe will be sharing these commercials with the school over the next few days to advertise our products and encourage customers to come to our market place on Tuesday. Please remember that our first exhibition is on Monday, March 11th from 5:30-6:15PM. Then we will be opening to the public on Tuesday, March 12th from 2:45-3:30PM. ExhibitionOur exhibition will take place on Monday, March 11 from 5:30-6:15 PM. All students are required to attend. Please arrive with your child at 5:15 PM to set up their booth. (This will be our "Sample Sale" for you and other family guests and friends only.) On Tuesday, March 12 at 2:45-3:30, during dismissal, we will host a Public Opening for our school. This will encourage more sales for our fundraising efforts. Because this event is after school hours, we hope that you will be able to allow your child to attend and then either pick them up at 3:30, or we can send them to Aftercare. (Permission slips will be sent home shortly.) Field Work Thank you to all of our volunteers that helped our successful field work to the Oceanside Farmer's Market on Thursday. Here are some photos. Notice many are of the stands and products, because that was what we were researching in preparation for our exhibition. Ask your child for details. Shark TankThank you to Sean Davis, father of Addison, for being our investor for our own "Shark Tank" episode. He was awesome and created an incredibly fun and engaging atmosphere for our young entrepreneurs. Here are some clips from the event. Sean heard presentations from each of the 7 businesses, and then made investments based on the teams' projections. Check it out. |
